yoga

Dating back over 6,000 years, Yoga is a tradition with roots in ancient India that has evolved over time to embrace the wisdom of many places and times.

It means many things to many people and over time it has split into dozens of different systems, but all share roots in the philosophy laid down in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali’s, a text authored in South Asia sometime between 200 BC and 500 BCE.

The sutras offer a program of study for the individual seeking unification, or “yoga.”  Yoga is directed at creating the highest level of energy, vitality, personal growth, and freedom for you as an individual.  The only way to do this is to work with yourself, not against yourself.

By working sensitively, we create an environment that’s healing and that honors our self.

THE BENEFITS OF YOGA
Yoga can help many chronic problems such as:
• anxiety & depression
• asthma
• carpal tunnel syndrome
• arthritis
• fibromyalgia
• chronic fatigue
• irritable bowl syndrome
• back and neck pain
• migraines

A regular Yoga practice can help build flexibility, increase strength and circulation and develop stamina. Other systems in the body, including the organs, can benefit as well. Yoga brings the systems and organs of the body into balance naturally giving an overall feeling of well-being. Yoga can also help correct poor posture. When the muscles around the spine become relaxed and supple, the alignment will fall more naturally into place. When that occurs, the energy moves freely through the body creating a feeling of weightlessness.

Yoga benefits during cancer treatments:
According to University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, research suggests that stress-reduction may help patients cope with the acute effects of treatment and improve after treatments. Incorporating stress-reduction techniques, regulated breathing, visual imagery, meditation, and various physical postures may be particularly useful for women with breast cancer after surgery and while undergoing treatment to reduce stress and facilitate recovery.
