While stability is always an integral aspect of a Pilates workout, this class seeks to focus in on stability and its importance in balance, posture, and injury prevention. Prerequisites: None

Standing Pilates

The founder of Pilates PhysicalMind Institute, Joan Breibart, describes how the practice of Standing Pilates leads to, “A neurorepatterning that will translate into functional, correct movement in standing, sitting or bending over to pick up something.” Through Standing Pilates one can improve posture, have less back, neck and shoulder pain, strengthen and shape leg muscles as well as increase balance to prevent falls and bruises. Practitioners have noticed improvement in their everyday activities including more accurate golf swings (and competitive scores!). Jackie Podence will begin each Standing Pilates class with a warm up and stretching followed by multiple versions of the 22 Standing Pilates exercises and more conditioning. She will guide the students through exercises isolating the pelvic floor muscles and also working them in conjunction with core muscle groups. *Those with hip, knee or ankle troubles will be shown how to adapt exercises to their particular needs. During Standing exercises, it is crucial for the pelvic floor muscles to be engaged. Working this particular muscle group prevents Prolapse, the falling down of internal organs as the result of a weak pelvic floor. Weak pelvic floor muscles also lead to incontinence which is the inability to control the flow of urine. Incontinence affects twenty-five million Americans. Prerequisite: None
